In 1925 Banco di Napoli (BN) began to consider the idea of transforming its New York agency into a trust company. In order to keep a stake that would allow it to control the new trust company even in the event of its merger with another group, BN formed the Banco di Napoli Corporation, a holding company intended to acquire a 67% stake in the Banco di Napoli Trust Company. The trust company, which aside from being a BN subsidiary also acted as a correspondent bank for it starting in 1930, opened five city agencies (in Harlem, Brooklyn, Fordham Heights, the East Side and the Bronx), becoming a key player in the handling of emigrant remittances. It would continue to operate until 1942, when the declaration of war between the United States and Italy led to its seizure and subsequent forced liquidation. |
