Handelsfinanz Bank was founded in Geneva on 12 February 1953.
In 1982 Banca Commerciale Italiana (BCI) sold its majority stake (69%) in the bank to Midland Bank Plc, retaining 11% of the shares through Banca Commerciale Italiana (BCI) Holding, which acquired another 5% from Sumitomo in January 1983, thereby increasing the stake to 16%.
