Privredna banka Zagreb (PBZ) was founded in Zagreb in 1966. On 17 December 1999 the Banca Commerciale Italiana Group signed an agreement with Croatia's State Agency for Deposit Insurance and Bank Resolution (DAB) to acquire 66.3% of the bank's ordinary share capital.
PBZ was Croatia's largest bank in terms of branches and second largest in terms of total assets and shareholder equity. Its strategy was based on expansion in the retail sector through leverage of BCI's branch network.
