Created on the mandate of the Polish authorities, the International Bank of Poland (IBP) was Poland's first primarily foreign-controlled universal commercial bank, established with the support of the International Finance Corporation, a World Bank affiliate promoting private investment in developing countries.
BCI acquired an 18% stake in the bank alongside fellow shareholders Amsterdam Rotterdam Bank, Crédit Lyonnais, Warsaw's Export Development Bank and Wielkopolski Credit Bank in Poznań.
In June 1997 BCI resolved to transfer its 27% stake, simultaneously acquiring a small stake in Bank Rozwoju Exsportu SA (BRE).
