Banco Wiese Sudameris was created in 1999 through the merger of Banco Wiese Ltdo and Banco de Lima, a bank founded in 1952 with Peruvian and French capital.  Banque Française & Italienne pour l'Amérique du Sud (Sudameris). acquired a stake in the latter in 1995. In 2006, Scotiabank acquired a majority stake (77%) in Banco Wiese Sudameris from Banca Intesa; it later purchased Banca Intesa's remaining shares in the bank, and as of 30 April 2009 Scotiabank has owned 97.66% of Scotiabank Peru S.A.A. both directly and indirectly.
