Founded in 1985, Banco Comercial Português (BCP) operated in Portugal as a private bank. In 1990 it signed a cooperation agreement with Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lombarde (CARIPLO), which acquired a 1.5% stake in it that would later be increased to 4.5%; in turn, BCP acquired a stake in Mediocredito Lombardo.
The two banks then formed a mortgage lending company under Portuguese law, each acquiring a 50% stake in it.
